Synopsis
The film is a slice of life that takes place over the course of a few days. It focuses on the pivotal moment in a young person’s life when they’re about to go off to college, but they don’t even know who they are yet.
Dust blows through the air as blue and orange peek into the sky in the outskirts of the small town. Telephone poles line a county road that runs through cotton fields. An old taco stand with colorful, old wooden signs is planted in the area, next to an old truck in the parking lot. The Mexican-American town is small and rural. The rest of the South Texas town is filled with old, 1950s-era historic broken buildings that are no longer in use, frozen in time. Zoe (17) is dreaming of being chased as she wanders around the town. Zoe contemplates her reflection in the broken windows of the old buildings, constantly looking over her shoulder to see if this menacing, faceless, human-like figure is still behind her. The moment she lets her guard down, the mysterious Black Figure catches her. Scared and surprised, she can’t even scream. Zoe wakes up from her dream with a horrible feeling in her gut, races to her apartment mail- box, and learns that she has just gotten her first college notification letter. It’s also her first rejection letter. Scared of being a disappointment, she lies to her Mom and tells her it’s an acceptance letter. Afterwards, Zoe must face the consequences as she wonders if she can still use college as a way to leave her rural hometown.
